Morgan Alexander, an Instructor at the Academy, recently competed in the European Savate Combat Championships and the World Savate Assaut Championships.
The finals of the European Combat were held in the mythic Cirque d’hiver in Paris in September. Morgan faced a determined and more experienced opponent in the F-70kg final, and came away with the title of vice-champion of Europe.
More recently, she competed in the 2018 Savate Assaut World Championships. A record number of athletes, from forty-four countries participated in the championships, which were held in Plovdiv, Bulgaria.
In Savate Assaut, the objective is to make contact with ones opponent, using a variety of kicks and punches, ideally without the opponent scoring against you. Assaut bouts are judged on demonstrating superior technical skills and ability, including scoring points by making contact.
Morgan took two wins in the pools phase, and qualified for the semi-finals. In the semis, she met the very good French Champion, Ilhame RAGUIG (France). Despite a fantastic effort, Morgan missed out, so as in the 2016 World Savate Assaut Championships, she once again had to settle for a Bronze Medal.
Two other Great Britain athletes took bronze medals this year : James Antill (Guildford) in the M-75kg category, and James Southwood (London) in the M-80kg category.
