As part of our 20th year celebrations, Sifu Rick Faye visited Cambridge Academy of Martial Arts® in October. Cambridge Academy is extremely proud of its long association with Rick Faye and his Minnesota Kali Group.
Promotion
Congratulations to CAMA Instructor Morgan Alexander on completing ten years as an Academy member (as of June this year), and on her promotion to Instructor Level 2 in CAMA JKD-Kali-Silat ‘Integrated Fighting Arts’ on 20th October. She was awarded her Certificate of Grade and Teaching Diploma at a recent training session.
Savateurs do it in boots!
Thanks mainly to the hard work of Jen and Morgan, the University group has been relaunched with a new name: Cambridge University Savate and Cane Fighting Society. We think this name more accurately reflects what we do.
CAMA at Cherry Hinton Festival
Seven members of the Academy took part in a demo at the Cherry Hinton Festival in September. We were lucky that it was a warm and sunny day – although perhaps a little hot for the cannists wearing full protective gear.
Canne de Combat Championships
In August 2009, Cambridge Academy hosted the first GBSF Canne de Combat Championships. The Leys School Sports Complex was an excellent venue, with good space and facilities, and even allowing us to mark-up the ring on their Sports Hall floor.
The largest contingent of fighters and officials was, as expected, from Cambridge. Others came from London, Watford, Oxford, Surrey and Marburg (yes, Marburg, in Germany!)
London 2012 – Cultural Olympiad
The Academy has worked in partnership with the Cambridge City Council Sports Development team for many years, particularly supporting the CitySport programme. To celebrate the London 2012 Open Weekend, the City Council opened the Corn Exchange to the public, offering a range of free sports and arts taster sessions.
Double cause for a party
Cambridge Academy Senior Instructors, Ollie Batts and Julie Gabriel were honoured with a surprise presentation as the club celebrated its 20th birthday on 1st July 2009. Ollie and Julie set up the club in 1989 and have since worked tirelessly to help their students develop and to promote the core values and diversity that martial arts offer.
Rafal in Combat Championships
Academy member Rafal Tichanow took part in the World Combat Championships in Serbia in June. Accompagnied by Julie Gabriel (coach) and Jasbir Nagi (official), Rafal travelled to Novi Sad for the three day event.

CAMA demo at Milton Fair
Nine members of the Academy took part in a demo at Milton Summer Fair on Saturday 11th July. The team showed skills and exercises from Savate, Canne de Combat and Kali/Eskrima.
